They are available in clusters at Researchgate.

You should first join Researchgate.

For papers written in English, you should search for Deirdre Wilson, Dan Sperber, and Robyn Carston. Then you will be able to download and read many other their works. Start with the more general.

For papers written in Chinese, perhaps no one has written more than the subject teacher of CBS 500 and 5131. Again, you should look for him in Researchgate and download his papers. If you find it annoying that he often tries (in vain) to promote formal pragmatics, then you can read the first half of some of his works and forget about the rest.

1. Write an essay of 1500 Chinese characters on one of the topics given here: a. Basic rhetoric, b. Cognitive pragmatic studies of rhetoric, c. literary stylistics

2. The first part presents the theory

3. The second part discusses examples of your own choice, showing how the theory can be applied to the analysis of the examples. (any examples related to the topic, so long as they have not been analyzed in books)

4. Include the list of references at the end.

5. Date of submission: Dec. 5-10.

2. The first part should be a summary of the theory involved

3. The second part applies the theory to the analysis of one special case.

4. The case study should be related to Chinese examples. No translation or gloss need to be given.

5. The case should be a raw piece of data, previously unanalyzed. Web-link or scanned copy of data should be provided.

6. The data does not need to be long. Try to focus on one interesting utterance. Include the rest part of the data in the Appendix, if that helps to reduce the word number.

7. Remember to compile a list of references. Only cited works should be included.

8. No need to write abstract or key words.

9. Submit by email to the lecturer’s official email address.

10. Date of submission: Dec. 5-10.
